Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Nicorandil 10mg Alternatives With Lower Risk Of Developing Ulcers In The Colon
A year ago my GP added Nicorandil to my basket of post-CABG medication. In early summer he increased the dose from 10mg to 20mg.. Within 2-3 months I developed ulcers in colon. In January we discussed medication and he agreed to revert to the lesser dosage. Colonoscopy reveals that ulcers are healing and biopsies show they are non-malignant. Are there alternatives to Nicorandil that (hopefully) carry a lower risk? - Peter YYYY@YYYY (in UK)
Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns.
You are correct in thinking that your intestinal ulcers have been caused by Nicorandil.
Nicorandil is a vasodilator; it dilates the blood vessels helping with good flow of blood in the vessels. One alternative of Nicorandil would be Isosorbide di nitrate, it is normally started at 10 mg twice a day and dose is increased based on whether you are experiencing angina/chest pain or not. Another alternative could also be beta-blockers.
I am not sure of what other cardiac medicines that you are taking. May I suggest you to see your doctor to discuss this issue?
I hope this answer has been helpful to you.
