Suggest A Substitute For Prilosec To Treat A Hernia
I am a 75 year old woman who has been taking prilosec for 20 years. I had a barium swollow test and and a endoscopy done that showed I had a herina and the doctor put on 2 pills a day. Tis was all done in 1995. I am concerned now with all that is going on about taking this medicine so long. Can I go off this medicine without any side effects? Is there another medicine that I can take more safely?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Sirisha's Response
prilosac is given for hyper acidity of gut to prevent ulcers.your endoscopy might have shown erosions or ulcer in the gastrio intestinal tract. dr prescribes this when the benefits are more with this medicine than its side effects for you.laboratory and medical tests (such as a magnesiumblood test, vitamin B-12 levels) may be performed periodically to monitor your progress or check for side effects when one is prescribed this medicine for long term.usual side effects are headache or abdomenal pain. unusually fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, persistent muscle spasms, seizures are relatively un common side effects. In case you want to stop this medicine you have to consult a dr who after proper physical examination and investigation will suggest you an alternate medicine. But you cant stop this without drs opinion.
