Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I take tramadol. Initially it was for mild arthritic pain. However I have noticed ( I am in menopause ) it has acted more like a mood stabilizer. I do not get a high from the medication but when I don t take it I can feel a severe negative change in my mood. Is there a substitute for tramadol that I should be using as a mood stabilizer or is this an effect of the medication?
The oral alternatives to tramadol and codeine are scarce. Paracetamol and Ibuprofen cannot be considered as effective alternatives because of their insufficient efficacy to treat moderate to severe pain.
Nucynta (Tapentadol) and Ultram (Tramadol) are similar in that they are considered “different” than the classic opioid meds.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
