Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am unable to take prescriptions for acid reflux/gerd. Tums help but, have to chew these up to 6 times daily. Is there a corrective surgery for this. I have had this issue for 30 yrs. or more. Was taking an over the counter but, that has begun to give me headaches.
THERE ARE REMIDIES TO PREVENT ACID REFLUX BY SIMPLE DIETARY PRECAUTIONS LIKE AVOID TAKING HEAVY MEALS LESS THAN 2 HR FROM SLEEP TIMING,MUST TAKE A WALK AT NIGHT AFTER DINE,AVOID ALCOHAL ,COFFE,SMOKING.ALONG THESE INTERVENTIONS YOU MAY HAVE A RADIOGRAPHIC SCAN LIKE BARIUM SWALLOW WHICH MAY SHOW A HIATAL HERNIA RESPONSIBLE FOR PERSISTENT REFLUX FOR WHICH SURGICAL INTERVENTION IS REQUIRED.
Surgery is an option that is not widely used to treat reflux.
You may want to consider asking your doctor for blood tests that would be able to check for H pylori infection. This infection can cause or worsen symptoms of reflux. If present, the use of a 2 week course of antibiotics would help.
There are a wide variety of medications that may help, your doctor may be able to suggest one that you have not tried as yet. In addition lifestyle measures such as: weight loss, reducing carbonated drinks, small meals, reducing acidic/spicy/fatty/fried foods would also help.
I hope this helps
