Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My doctor put me on ambient 5mg. I have given it a try and it did absolutely nothing. I end up taking a little extra ativan to put me to sleep. What are other alternative medications I should talking to my doctor about? P.s. I have already tried melatonin and benadryl dozens of times with no luck. I was put on seroquel for sleep which worked but with a host of nasty side effects (lactating, facial hair, high prolactin and infertility.) Thanks for any help I can get.
Fortunately, there are a variety of methods to improve sleep. The most important intervention is to ensure good sleep habits, avoiding exercise or stimulants such as caffeine in the evenings and using a routine leading up to bedtime. However, when trying to overcome brief problems, the medicines that you have tried are good for a start but only for short term help. It is important to avoid habit forming medications like ambien and ativan for any use beyond 4 days. You may wish to discuss some non-habit forming alternatives such as mirtazapine and trazodone with your physician.
