Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am aware that it is bad for you to take too much iron, but I am often anaemic and finish a course of ferrous sulphate only to become anaemic again. Would you advise taking a maintenance amount to keep my levels up? I am 53, vegetarian for the last 29 years and eat a well balanced diet.
As per my clinical experience, usually 3 months therapy with iron is mandatory once the hemoglobin level is under control to replenish the iron stores of the body. Once if this condition is fulfilled and then you have anemia, detailed iron studies in form of - Serum B12 level - Serum folate level - MCV - MCHC - Serum ferritin - Iron TIBC ratio are mandatory to get evaluation with complete hemogram
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
