Suggest Alternative Medication For Hand-foot-and-mouth Disease

I am 35 years old and have a brutal case of hand foot and mouth that I presume I got from my son. I have terrible ulcers and blisters - more than 20 - in my mouth. I also have blisters on my neck and upper chest near my clavicle and on my legs. My doctor proscribed prednisone and valtrex but on day 4 it seems like it is just getting worse. How long does this take to heal for adults? Are there any remedies that will actually work? Thank you!!

Hello,

You have not mentioned whether you are diabetic or not. In case you have a history of diabetes, you are suggested to control your blood sugar level at all cost. Hand and foot ulcer should be thoroughly cleaned with warm water and savlon/dettol. After drying it, apply topical ointments like Bacitracin/ Neomycin or hydrocortisone in the area affected.

If needed antimicrobial dressing should be done. You are suggested to visit ER, get clinically examined for ulcers in the mouth & throat. You need to get endoscopy & barium X-Ray done. Continue to take the medicines prescribed by your doctor. Esophageal ulcers are treated with a combination of antibiotics(augmentin), medications to reduce stomach acid(antacids or PPI's), and diet and lifestyle changes.

You may need intravenous support for better and faster healing and recovery. Visit ER, if needed get admitted. Get treated at the earliest. Avoid addictions if any. Stay well hydrated and take adequate sleep.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
