Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 44 and was diagnosed with prostatitis many years ago. I am taking ciprofloxacin for another 3 weeks but find it not working this time and it has been very effective previously many times. I am seen my doctor next week and wondering if I should ask for a different medication? What are your thoughts? Just curious is prostatitis a form STI? Thanks and look forward to your reply.
Yes,prostatitis may be related to sexual transmission but the chances are uncommon and if you have already taking ciptofloxacin 500 mg since 3 weeks without much improvement then you can ask for some alternative good antibiotics.
You can ask levofloxacin 750 mg which is more potent than ciprofloxacin or you can ask for Nitrofurantoin which is an alternative good antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections or even 3rd generation cephalosporins are also good choice.
You can consult urologist for culture and sensitivity testing of blood and urine for further treatment options.
