Suggest Alternative Medication In Place Of Nifedipine While On Tegretol
My Dad, is 88. He has been taking nifedipine for awhile. He has nerve pain from shingles that he had a couple years ago. The recently put him on Tegretol for that pain and it has helped. BUT he can t take the nifedipine with it. They changed it med to Losartin and it is not working for him. Is there another seizure med he could try for the nerve pain that would be compatible with Tegretol?
Hi I appreciate your concern for your beloved who seems to be suffering from Postherpetic neuralgia.
Yes, Tegretol may reduce the BP lowering efficacy of Nifedipine by reducing its blood levels.
And since Losartan (another BP lowering medication) does not seem to be effective in controlling his high BP, so in that case he may continue to take Nifedipine for his high BP.
However, for his postherpetic neuralgia, alternate effective medications could be either Gabapentin or Pregablin which do not reduce the efficacy of Nifedipine when taken together.
Hope these answer your query.
