Suggest Alternative Medication In Place Of Valtrex
Hello . Iam Al . Thank you for ansewing my drug questions . I have a friend taking a medication for herpes . I cant remember the name of it , but I think it is making her hair fall out . Do you know other medication besides Valtrex for herpes . I know its not Valtrex .
A medication against herpes, which is found in rare cases to cause hair fall is acyclovir. This in itself is not a common side effect of the drug. Valacyclovir on the other hand (Valtrex) is not found to cause hair loss so I think she can safely use Valtrex to treat her herpes infection and reduce the risk for hair loss. It is worth mentioning that hair loss due to acyclovir generally improves a few weeks to months after stopping the treatment.
I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
