Suggest Alternative Medication To Dilaudid-HP While Treating Kidney Disease

I was in a terrible car accident in 94 with multiple injuries including a closed head injury. It took me years to regain my speech and make up for the deficiencies from the brain damage. I was given Demerol 100mg injections for the excruciating headaches which debilitated me daily. Most days it would take the edge off, some days it could not be controlled and that meant a trip to the ER and a special rx cocktail to knock me out for a couple days . These went on til 2014. I had a hip replacement and contracted pneumonia afterwards along with blood poisoning. I recovered from all that to find I now have kidney disease! Now I can t take demerol ,(it filters through the kidneys). The Doctor put me on Dilaudid injection (4mg). It doesn t do the job like the demerol did. Is there anything you could suggest that is comparable to the demerol without hurting the kidneys? Thanks in advance for your help. M. Mason

Hello There

After going through your medical query I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that Demerol is excreted through kidney and can decrease kidney functions if you are already have kidney injury. You can consult your treating physician for further alteration of the medication.

Hopefully this information will guide you properly.

Kind Regards
Dr Bhanu Partap
