Suggest Alternative Medication To Replace Zolpidem

After having breast cancer and while I was getting chemo I could not sleep well. So the oncologist prescribed Zolpidem. That was in 2005. Since then I have reduced the dose from 10mg to 5mg and now I am trying to take 2.5 mg with 1.50gr of Melatonin. But my short term memory is not doing well. I need to verify things too many times. I used to have a sharp memory in the past. Zolpidem especially did not do me a favor. I also take a tablet with Calcium + mineral (for many years). How do I get rid of Zolpidem?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You already seem to have done the most important part to get rid of Zolpidem. That is having gradually reduced the dosage. 2.5 is as low as you can go and I would suggest that you simply stop taking it now. If sleep issues arise melatonin dosage can be increased, it would be the best and safest alternative.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
