Suggest Alternative Medicine For Haldol Which Is Anti-psychotic
How do I get hospice people to take my father OFF Haldol? They say they put everyone on it -- everyone who shows dementia-related anger. I believe my father is frustrated and no one listens to him (his speech is impaired), so he is MAD that people (in the facility) treat him the way they do. He is showing side effects of the medication, but Hospice will not take him off. I am not the primary care-giver, so I have no voice either. What is an alternative medicine that is NOT anti-psychotic?? Why are they using this on my 93 year old father?
The person who has power of attorney can specifically ask for not using Haldol. It sounds like poor practice to routinely give Haldol to the patients - perhaps in an attempt to make them easier for the staff.
Can you talk with whomever has power of attorney about your concern? If that does not work, and as this is your own father, I suggest contacting his primary doctor directly and voicing your concern. Even if his primary doctor can't talk with you about the details of your father's care due to HIPAA laws, that doesn't prohibit YOU from voicing your concerns to him/her.
I can't say which medication would be right for your father if he is agitated or angry, but there are medications that are milder than Haldol, which is used for agitated delerium or psychosis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh,
