Suggest Alternative To Celexa

Have taken generic Celexa for about 3 years, first 20 mg then 40 when 20 didn t seem to help. However, 40 taken consistently makes my brain feel totally flat. With my doctor s help, I ve tried a combination of 20 for a couple days, than one day of 40. That seemed to work for awhile. Now, I m trying 20 again. I think I need a change. I have a Dr. appt tomorrow, and will tell him I think I ve hit the wall with Celexa. Over the course of the past 18 years, I ve taken Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Lexapro, and Celexa. Zoloft and Wellbutrin worked well for some time, but eventually they began to have serious effects on the liver. Any suggestions on how best to talk to my internal med doc?

Hello and I'm sorry you are having these problems. I would suggest telling your doctor just what you have told us here. Sometimes adding a second medication to the low dose of celexa can be helpful. Often a lower dose of two medications can avoid the side effects of each and they can act together to help you with depression. What medication to add would depend upon what symptoms you are having fore example are you tired a lot, are you not sleeping, that kind of things. If combination therapy does not work there are many newer medications that can be tried. Also it is true that counseling and exercise also help tremendously with depression and anxiety so try adding those if you are not already doing them.
