Suggest Alternative Treatment For Hemangiomas On Liver

I m 40 years old and mother of two. I have four hemangiomas on my liver discovered in 1996 when I had the gallbladder removed. In that time two of them measured 2.5cm and they didn t grow for 10 years. After ten years they started to grow considerably, my last CTScan from Aug. 2014 show that the largest one measure 19.2 cm transversely by 9.4 cm in AP dimension by 11.6 cm in sagittal diameter; this lesion is quite lobular extending into the left upper quadrant, displacing the stomach/bowel loops laterally and posteriorly. The next largest one in the inferior right lobe of the liver measuring 7.5 cm/7.0 cm/8.0 cm. The two smallest hemangiomas are located in the right lobe measuring up to 1.2 cm. The liver doctor specialist consider surgery ASAP because they are keep growing in size and also the symptoms but surgeons don t really agree because of the magnitude of the surgery with high risk of death or major disability. I will have a new MRI in october. Right now I m in medical leave because I m not able two work more then two hours when I became very tired and I m in too much pain. I can t take narcotics because of side effects and I have to manage just with ibuprofen. Please give me an advise because I m desperate and I don t know what I have to do.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the hemangioma of 19 cm is somewhat unusual presentation and odd in your presentation. As majority of the hemangioma of the liver remain static in size over long years period and do not pause any problem on clinical grounds also. However, as they are growing in size with significant distress of pain, inability to work, the only option left is to go for the surgery considering all ill effects and outcome of the surgery

Do discuss the pros and cons of the surgery with your hepatic surgeon before proceeding to the curative decisions.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
