I have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism by my physician. I have had a thyroid uptake and scan and currently taking methimazole 3 times per day. My physician now wants to do a RAI on me. Said thyroid is either 3 times the size of a normal thyroid or producing 3 times more than the normal thyroid. I have serious concerns with the RAI treatment. Are there any alternatives to this treatment/
In the first case the decision to do a definite treatment depends on your age, the tendency to reactivate after 1 year treatment with methimazole, the antibodies level, ophtalmological problems, ect. There are two alternatives of treatment: Surgery or radioactive iodine. Is the patient who decides after being informed for the side effects and advantages of both alternatives. In toxic adenoma and multi nodular goiters after stabilizing the hormonal level with methimazole one of the above alternatives is offered.
Hope i was helpful and it will be a pleasure to answer further questions.
