Suggest An OTC Laxative For Chronic Constipation

Is there an OTC laxative that is safe for me to use for chronic constipation, if I have kidney disease? I take several pain medications (for over five years) that have resulted in chronic constipation. My primary care physician recommended mineral oil, which I use once or twice a week. I have had two severe GI episodes in the past two months - one was diarrhea and the other was gas and vomiting. I can t see my PCP for two weeks and will not see my kidney specialist until October. I do not have the symptoms of an intestinal blockage - no bloating, no abdominal pain, and I had a BM yesterday. I thought this was going to be a simple question but none of my medical conditions is simple. Medical and Prescription Drug History: I have hypertension, chronic kidney disease and stage 3 kidney failure for which I take a 20Meq of potassium, DVT taking warfarin, severe cervical and lumbar osteoarthritis and other degenerative problems for which I take an opioid, Nucynta, plus Cymbalta, Limbrel, Zanaflex; I take Labatalol and Lasix for the hypertension - the Lasix causes problems with my kidneys but I retain fluid too much to stop taking it completely. I have had three surgeries on my cervical spine - two ADCF and one posterior cervical laminectomy and fusion with mass instrumentation. The only other surgery that I have had was an arthroscopic rotator cuff and labrum repair on my right shoulder. Might as well mention that I had a duodenal ulcer at the age of 15. I am a non-smoker, age 58; 6 0 tall; weigh 250 lbs and lived an active life until three years ago with the past year being very sedentary. Email: YYYY@YYYY

Hi,

Constipation may be caused by several issues, however, you should try first with changing lifestyle and dietary habits. You need to increase fiber intake.

Good fiber sources include bran and other whole grains found in cereals, breads, and brown rice, vegetables such as brussels sprouts, carrots, and asparagus, Fresh fruits, or dried fruits such as raisins, apricots, and prunes Beans. Also, you should exercise regularly. Moving your body will keep your bowels moving, too.

Second, you may at times need to try a laxative such as Fleet Phospho-Soda, Milk of Magnesia, or glycerin suppositories. If there wont be improvement on these measures, you should consider doing diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy, anal sphincter manometry and food allergy testing.

In some cases, it may be a sign of tumour so it should be ruled out if symptoms persist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
