Suggest An Alternative For Benzodiazepines For A Toddler
My 2.5 year old son has a mutated gene in his GABA receptor. Seizures started at 8 months. After being put on Keppra my son was seizure free for a year. They have since started again and have been happening every couple of weeks for the last 4-5 months. Zonisamide was added to his medication however, the seizures remain. His doctor wants to put him on Onfi, but the thought of my toddler on benzodiapines is terrifying. Is there no other treatment option?
Benzodiazepanes in good drug dose like Phenobarbitone is effective in treating seizures. Only overdose can cause side effects. Please do as per neurologist because seizures cause more side effects than benzodiazepanes.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Prasanna Lakshmi, Pediatrician
