Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking brand name Zantac for years and have just recently run into a problem that the active ingredient Ranitidine is not currently available by Glaxo Smith Kline until possibly 4th quarter of the year. I am unable to take OTC Zantac due to a problem with an inactive ingredient. We suspect binding with dairy or gluten both of which I cannot tolerate. OTC Zantac leaves me with stabbing stomach pains within 4 days! ??any ideas. Since Zantac is not a proton pump inhibitor are there any other histamine type of GERD medications that might give me a similar response??
Ranitidine is an oral drug that blocks the production of acid by acid-producing cells in the stomach. It belongs to a class of drugs called H2 (histamine-2) blockers that also includes Cimetidine, Nizatidine (Axid), and Famotidine (Pepcid).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
