Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking xanax for PTSD for the last 10 years. I want to stop taking it because of the dependency issues and because I believe that there are new and better meds for PTSD. Is there an over the counter alternative and if not is there an alternative that my Dr. can give me?
Buspirone or SSRI can be effective alternative to Xanax. Buspirone is a newer anti-anxiety medication which is less likely to cause dependence, abuse potential and withdrawal effects is equally effective for the treatment of PTSD.
Another good option would be selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors like citalopram or fluoxetine which can also be used for the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). You are advised to consult your doctor for the prescription.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
