Suggest An Alternative Medicine For Co-proxamol

My 93 year old mum has just been taken off Coproxamol her GP just stopped it and sent Co Codamol even though they knew she suffered with constipation as yet they have failed in their duty of care to find an alternative pain relief with less side effects than Coproxamol. I know it s down to money there s a big article in Pulse plus a forum of people now left in pain

Hi,

Co-proxamol (paracetamol 325mg and dextropropoxyphene 32.5mg) and Co-codamol (DescriptionCodeine/acetaminophen)-both contain opioid analgesic and hence can cause constipation.

Alternatives are: Tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) say amitriptyline which has analgesic properties.
Gabapentin is also useful for neuropathic pain and can be used as adjunct therapy with plain paracetamol .
Local Treatment of Pain includes lidocaine patch, capsaicin patch; over-the-counter preparations of menthol, methyl salicylate, or capsaicin have an effect on pain.
Botulinum toxin type A given subcutaneously in the region of pain is a third-line treatment for peripheral neuropathic pain.

Interventional treatments are available for pain conditions such as microvascular decompression or percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy for trigeminal neuralgia and occipital-nerve stimulation for cluster headache. Epidural analgesia or intrathecal treatment with ziconotide, clonidine, bupivacaine, or a combination of these agents may be used for uncontrolled pain associated with cancer.

Many patients with chronic pain use complementary therapies, which include meditation, yoga, acupuncture, music therapy, heat therapy, massage, chiropractic, guided imagery, and biofeedback.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
