Suggest An Alternative Of Apixaban

My mother was prescribed apixaban 2.5mg twice daily.by Dr. B.Majhi. This medicine is costly. As my father is a pensioner it is being a problem for him to buy the medicine, which is needed for my mother. Please suggest an alternate medicine, which is affordable.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Warfarin can be an alternative for Apixaban.

Wafarin is cheap but equally effective blood thinner that can be used instead of Apixaban. However, its effects need to be monitored by certain lab tests such as prothrombin time and INR which should be kept in their normal range in order to achieve effective anti coagulant effects.

You need to consult a doctor for the prescription and follow up.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
