Suggest An Alternative Of Metoprolol

I have been taking metoprolol for more than 6 years for diagnosed Afib - it doesn't help at all and the side effects are affecting my ability to function- can you reccomend a different med? The metoprolol also lowers my blood pressure (usual bp 110 over 70) so I cannot take a higher dose- I read recently that potassium helps Afib but don't know how much to take

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
If you do not have high blood pressure then the Metoprolol would be used to control a fast heart rate. If you do not have a fast heart rate then you may not need the metoprolol at all. There are no medicines that get rid of atrial fibrillation. See your doctor before stopping the metoprolol since you may need it or something like it. Do not take potassium unless your blood tests say that you need it. It can be very dangerous to have too much potassium
