Suggest An Alternative Treatment For Swelling And Pain In The Ankles

I fell down 1/2 a flight of stairs on april 8th and injured my ankle and foot. I was told that there were no fractures and that I had a grade III sprain to my lateral ankle and foot. I was put in a boot and on crutches for 2 weeks. PT was started at 3 weeks post injury as I was having severe nerve pain too. Elavil was also started. I continued to complain of pain and was told it was just nerve damage. I finally got a 2nd opinion on June 20th with and MRI. The MRI showed a fracture of the posterior malleolus/posterior tibia.I will attach the report. I had been wearing a foot brace at that time and was told by the 2nd dr to continue the brace and stop PT at that time. She also changed me to Neurontin as I was having a lot of side effects from the Elavil. I am unable to take the Neurontin d/t side effects too. My question is how is the fracture going to heal when I am only in a brace and am full weight bearing on it with basically no restrictions except running. I am a nurse and after all of my shifts my ankle gets so swollen and painful.

Hello,

Such kind of fractures (where the are no fragments or pieces of bone detached from the main bone) is not applicable to surgical treatment.

In general, minimal fractures (when the bone is fractured but it stays in place altogether and there are not fragments of bone detaching from the main bone) heal by themselves, with time.

Therefore, the suggested treatment is to rest and take care of the injured foot, alongside with all the recommendations given by your doctor.

I understand that you have to work, but you should consider taking some time off in order to not put so much pressure on the injured foot.

The idea is to limit excessive movement and not to confine you to bed, so you can walk or do your everyday duties, but without too much effort.

This means that your active nurse job and duties need to be alleviated a little bit or limited, in order to meet to your condition and to give the injury an opportunity to heal faster.

In your case, in order to alleviate the swelling and pain, try to apply onion and black salt (raw sea salt) to the affected area for 1-2 nights (before sleep and until morning) as this will make the swelling go away and will decrease the associated pain.

This can be done very easily: grind the onion, mix with raw sea salt, and wrap the ankle with a bandage in order for the mixture to surround and to have close contact with the swollen area.

Take care not to make the bandage too tight as it might compromise blood and lymph flow.

I think you will be OK, with some rest, applying of onion-salt mixture and following your doctor's advice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
