Suggest An Effective Alternate Medicine For Antabuse And Acamprosate

I m only 22 but have severe alcohol problems as well as depression and anxiety. I m slowly recovering from the alcohol now and I m under a local addiction unit. However due to past overdoses the psychiatrist is reluctant to prescribe me Baclofen which is apparently very helpful with cravings. I ve been on both antabuse and acamprosate in the past however these are now ruled unsuitable. Is there any other route I can go down?

Hi,

There are no apparent reason to stop both of these drugs like Antabuse and acamprosate except if your psychiatrist wants to tapper down the drugs in case of betterment in symptoms. If history of drug overdose is suspected, it can be given in controlled clinics under strict surveillance or DOT treatment. Also other muscle relaxants can be used like orphenidine or tizanidine if signs of twitchings persist. Also, B complexes and folic acid supplementation should be done which can be low with history of overt alcoholism. Meanwhile group therapies, behavior modification therapies and sessions with motivational psychologist may help.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
