Suggest An Effective Alternative For Zolpidem And Diazepam

I am 83 years old and have had sleep problems for years. I've been using zolpidem and diazepam for years (not together) which are effective. Now hearing that both could predispose brain to Alzheimers and want to stop using them. Any suggestions for replacement medications?

Hello,

It is true that those medications, in particular, Diazepam shouldn't be used for long periods, they create tolerance, dependence and affect cognitive functions.

The safest means would be melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone. If not effective then a sedating antidepressant like Mirtazapine may be considered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
