Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My three year old grandson has had bowel movements that are bright green in color. He does not eat green vegetables, and as far as we can determine, he hasn t eaten anything that should cause this. He had diarrhea about a week ago, but now he is normal except for this unusual green color. It seems to me that he should be checked but his mother is resisting.
The unusual green color in the stool of your grandson might be a sequelae of the diarrhea he had. It may also be due to drugs or food like ice cream where coloring agent has been added. It can also due to iron tonic. Rarely it can be due to defective absorption of bile in the intestine. Usually the problem of green color stool will go within a week and therefore there is no need for concern; however if the green color stool persist for more than a week or the child is suffering from abdominal pain, fever or vomiting then the child needs investigation. You may have to consult a pediatrician. For the time being give your grandson plenty of fluids like better milk, soup, coconut water which will help to get rid of green color stool.
