Suggest Cough Medication That Is Advisable During Early Pregnancy
Hi, I’m 5 weeks pregnant with a cough. My OB prescribed Ambroxol syrup 1 tbsp 3 x a day for 5 days. I read on it and most of what I saw cautioned on taking it during the 1st trimester. I’ve been taking hot lemon with honey. What cough medicine can you recommend? I have thick phlegm specially in the morning for three days now. Thank you. IK
During the first trimester of pregnancy, it is always better to avoid any medication for minor’s illnesses. That is why it is better to avoid medication.
If you have thick phlegm and is associated with fever, then it may be possibility for Upper respiratory tract infection. For that, you can take tablet Amoxicillin after consultation.
For cold and cough, take steam inhalation to be 3 times a day and warm water gargle for 5 to 6 times per day. You can continue syrup Ambroxol, if have severe cough.
I will suggest you to follow up with detailed history or consult with the gynecologist for detailed examination.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Shyam B. Kale
