Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been treated for past 10 months for iron deficiency anemia. Problem presented is iron storage. Body not storing enough iron. Ferritin around 14. Taking two iron pills containing Vit. C. a day. What causes this? Had colonoscopy, endoscopy, pill cam and bloodwork drawn for Kidney function...all tests came back with good results. No bleeding to be found anywhere. What do you think my next step is?...the progress is very slow but going in right direction. Is this normal progress for this type of anemia?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. Iron deficiencyanaemia with depleted stores would take a longer time for correction. It is good to note that you had a work up for bleeding tendencies and has come out to be normal. Also, what you are taking iron supplementation in the form of medication is also fine and you need to continue with it. It might be better to get deworming done by taking a single dose of Albendazole. Kindly take iron rich foods like dark green leafy vegetables, jaggery and red meat (in case you are non-vegetarian). You can also go for parental iron infusion if necessary. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
