Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has just gone through a gout attack in his finger joint. It presented with a boil like eruption and swelling and redness of the finger which required surgical cleaning. He has had arthritis in his hands for years but we did not know about gout. His Dr. has prescribed allopurinol along with Bactrim for 10 days. What dietary suggestions do you have to prevent future attacks?? Thank you. YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Gout is probably one of the disease where dietary advice is very helpful. Patient suffering from gout should take lots of milk products. Red meat, sugars specially fructose and alcohol are the known triggers for precipitating gout attacks. In liquor, beer is worst because of its high guanine content and probably moderate wine is not harmful. If these dietary advices are followed then the serum uric acid level can be lowered by upto 1 mg/dl irrespective of antihyperuricemic drug intake.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Devender Bairwa
