Suggest Diet If Suffering From Painful Swallowing Due To Epiglottis Lesion

My spouse had a biopsy done 8 days ago. There was a lesion on the epiglottis he is a 40+ yr. smoker 2 packs per day. 67y/o wm. Within the past three days he has trouble speaking and swallowing. Prior to the biopsy he coughs when swallowing liquid and complains about eating any solids. Any suggestions on diet. His ENT is on vacation until Monday when the pathology results are given during the follow up. He also has another biopsy of the thyroid on the 28th.

Hi,

Noted the history about your husband having biopsy of a lesion on epiglottis. Epiglottis is a part of laryno-pharyngeal apparatus that closes the airway for the food and liquid to pass into upper esophagus. Hence any lesion of epiglottis will be painful and hence there is not much that can be done till healing occurs.

Hence try to give him plenty of oral fluids and solids if tolerated. If not possible then he may need intravenous fluid supplements. Also important is the diagnosis since he is a smoker, this can be cancer and in this regards then the treatment is complicated and may need additional way to feed him.

I hope this answer helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.
