Suggest Diet Plan In A Person With Diabetes And Parkinson S Disease

I have been taking 3 300mg Gabapentin capsules along with one 25/100 Sinemet CR, one 5 mg. Eldepryl, along with 2 carbo/Dopa 25/100, for PD in the evening. I also have Diabetes ( Metformin 1000 mg. in PM) and also Desyrel 3 50 mg oral tabs. I still wake up every 3 hours with the writhing leg symptoms that heralded the onset of the PD years ago. The PD has caused me to urinate during the night every 3 hours... I know that this night time urinating is a symptom of PD, but I am concerned with the dry mouth, the break-through of symptoms (leg writhing).....I also worry that the Desyrel is addictive, and an especially helpful sleep inducer Earlier, I was given Closapine for the evening, but that seemed to me to be overkill. Why isn t the PD med (especially since I am taking a CR type in addition to the general type of carbo/dopa..) helping? I suppose I fear the answer.....namely, your PD is progressing and you need more meds). Can you recommend a sound nutritional plan for a person with PD and Diabetes? I don t feel that there has been any nutritional knowledge shared re. PD and diet....why is that??? I have little vitality, ride my recumbent bike 6-8 miles a day, at an average resistance level (6 miles in 30 minutes). I go to the PD association bi-monthly for support meetings, yet still am apathetic and somewhat depressed. I am a 67 year old female....Thanks....Laurie Johnson

Hello,

The diet intake of diabetes would be mainly that concern of carbohydrate free or restricted items including that of sugary things and artificial sweeteners. There is no particular food charts for Parkinsonism patient, however following are best recommendations for that aspect:
- Nuts are having neuroprotective effects, but be careful as it contains high calories
- Blue berries and raspberries are proven anti-oxidants helpful in PD
- Coconut oil, spinach, collard greens, soy products and oily fish are best anti-inflammatory compounds
- High protein intake makes efficacy of Levodopa and carbidopa less so far as therapeutic level is concerned

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
