Suggest Diet To Keep Diabetes Under Control

I am recently diagnosed with diabetes and have had my first day on metformin. Have not yet had an appointment with a diabetes counselor to go over a diet. What should I be looking for on labels for sugar and carbohydrate counts when I go shopping? I know by doing some on line research what foods to stay away from but just need a little assistance until I am referred to a nutritionist.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Till you get dietitian to advise...please remember following tips.

In diabetes, you need to have high protein, vitamin & mineral diet, Avoid sugar as completely. Carbohydrates should be derived from whole grains, legumes, vegetables, nonsweet fruits. Diet rich in sour sweets, salads, vegetables & 10-12 glasses of water are needful. Start 40 minutes of exercises. Try to reduce excessive weight.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
