Suggest Dosage Of Pentaxim For New Born With Neonatal Seizures

Hello Doctor, My son was born on 31.05.2015. He has been given OPV Zero Dose at age of 1 week, OPV + IPV (PENTAXIM) at 6-7 weeks(18.05.15). Now he is 11 weeks old and pentaxim is not available in market. According to the government of India recommended schedule 2nd dose of OPV & IPV should be given 18.06.15. I am bit worried as the medicine is out of stock. He did not cry immediately after birth and had neonatal seizures on the same day of birth and after 15 days so doctor adviced to give pentaxim to him considering his health condition. You are requested to advice me whether is it OK to give 2nd dose beyond schedule or will It cause any problems . Also please advice is there any altenative for Pentaxim which suits his condition.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

At least two doses one month apart are to be given of Pentaxim for 90% immunity and 3 doses for 99% immunity. Unfortunately there is no exactly similar substitute for Pentaxim is available. Pentaxim and easy five vaccines are two somewhat resembling vaccinations each against five diseases. However, Pentaxim does not contain protection against hepatitis b, where as easy five contains no protection against polio. The child must be protected against all six diseases ideally. These are -- diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, hemophilus influenza, hepatitis B and polio.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
