Dear Neeraj, Hi
Thanks for posting your query on HCM.
Increased level of activity of thyroid gland is called as
hyperthyroidism.
The signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism include hyperactivity, mood swings (such as anxiety, irritability and nervousness),
muscle weakness, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, even when your appetite and the amount and type of food you eat remain the same or even increase, rapid heartbeat or irregular heartbeat with palpitations, tremor in your hands and fingers, sweating, changes in menstrual patterns, heat intolerance, changes in bowel patterns, especially more frequent bowel movements, an enlarged thyroid gland or goiter which may appear as a swelling at the base of your neck
The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies produced by your immune system stimulate your thyroid to produce too much thyroid hormones, it tends to run in families and is more common in women than in men.
The diagnosis is usually confirmed by blood tests that measure the levels of thyroxine and TSH in your blood. High levels of thyroxine and low levels of TSH indicate hyperthyroidism.
In Allopathy, anti-thyroid medications (like
Propylthiouracil or Methimazole) gradually reduce symptoms of hyperthyroidism by preventing your thyroid gland from producing excess amounts of hormones.
Symptoms usually begin to improve in six to 12 weeks, but treatment with anti-thyroid medications typically continues at least a year and often longer.
Of the two, Propylthiouracil is a safer antithyroid drug to treat hyperthyroidism during pregnancy.
The common side effects of these medications includes skin rash, joint pains or sometimes serious
liver damage. They also can make you more susceptible to infection due to
agranulocytosis (decreased neutrophil counts).
Beta blockers (like
Propranolol) is also used to reduce a
rapid heart rate & help prevent palpitations.
Hope this answers your query.
