Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
The only pain reliever, other than (Aleve or Asperin) I have been able to take without a severe hive, itching, or nausea reaction was Darvon. Recently I went through knee surgery and found out that Darvon was taken off the market. My doctors have prescribed several different pain medications, but I have had reactions to them all. Is there a generic for Darvon that I might be able to find somewhere ? Does any reliable country still sell it?
Thanks for posting your query on HCM! I appreciate your concern however I would like to inform you that Darvon is actually a trade name of Dextropropoxyphene ( a narcotic drug) which in addition to other side effects was linked to high risk of damaging the heart producing life threatening arrhythmias. In view of these harmful toxic effects on the heart, most of the countries have banned the manufacture of this drug alone or with other drugs.
For the control of pain following surgery like knee surgery you may request your surgeon to prescribe Tramadol which is also a narcotic drug with equal efficacy in reducing the moderate to severe pain.
I hope I explained the reason behind the non availability of Darvon. Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery from knee surgery. Take care.
