Suggest If It Is Normal To Cough Up Blood Even After Six Months Of Tuberculosis Treatment
Hi, I was diagnosed with TB at the beginning of 2014 and started treatment on the 3rd of January. Tomorrow will be 3 months since I ve been taking my medications having not missed any. I saw my doctor at the beginning of June who looked at my most chest x-ray and said that the TB still looks to be there and extended my treatment for another 3 months until October. My main symptoms were wheezing, coughing and coughing up blood. At the beginning I was coughing up extreme amount of blood but this has reduce a bit but it s still happening. I would like to know if this is normal to be continuing to cough up blood nearly six months into the treatment?
Thanks for your question on HCM. In my opinion you should consult pulmonologist and get done sputum for AFB culture and sensitivity to rule out Brug resistant TB. Since you are saying that x ray is not improving and blood in sputum is still present, you may have drug resistant TB. In this kind of TB, routine first libe drugs are resistant so we need to give second line drugs according to culture and sensitivity report. So coughing up blood after 6 months of treatment is not normal. Consult pulmonologist and get done sputum AFB culture and sensitivity.
