Suggest Immediate Action If Ibuprofen Is Swallowed By My 19-year-old Daughter

Hi, my 19 month old daughter, weighs about 30 lbs., might have swallowed Ibuprofen 200mg. I don t know if she did or how many if she did. My husband saw her pouring them on the floor. I m feeding her banana now. She looks normal. My husband said observe her for now. Should i call poison control? Just happened about half an hour ago. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Fortunately, Ibuprofen does not usually cause serious problems unless a dose larger than 100mg/kg is taken. Your daughter weighs about 13 kg, and so 200 mg would be well below this.

She can be safely monitored at home, she may have some GI upset but otherwise would normally not have any symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
