Suggest Management Of Sleep Related Groaning Noise

My mother makes this constant low humming groaning noise through the night that wakes everyone. She also does it anytime and she says she is not aware of it. When I tell her not to make that noise she stops. Could this be a bad habit of is something else going on. Sometimes at night it gets so loud I have to tell her to stop. This is very disturbing and breaks our sleep I feel so bad for her, what could be wrong ?

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

The noise you hear can be due to disordered sleep pattern during sleep. You can take your mom to an ear, nose, and throat doctor to look for airway obstruction (large tonsils, nasal polyps, swollen turbinates). She can also be suffering from sleep groaning (catathrenia), if that's so she needs to look a neurologist or sleep medicine specialist for an evaluation. May be she will need treatment with CPAP during sleep time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arturo Benítez-Serrato
