Suggest Medication For Borderline Personality Disorder

I have been dating my girlfriend for more than 6 months and she has borderline personality disorder. We just got engaged and shes fearful to move forward because she read that BPD can make her randomly hate me. We love each other and have been very happy her BPD mostly kicks in when there is some conflict near her and she has a issue with impulse control. She will try to lash out by excessively drinking or doing something self destructive. With a lot of love and A LOT of education i have been able to help her though events as they arise. With so much reading im not sure how to respond to her fear. Some documentation says this will and can happen and others say it may not. Is it possible to be happily married to someone with BPD? Shes currently being treated with Abilify.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

She has history of borderline personality disorder and is on Abilify, an anti-psychotic medication. You are suggested to get her clinically examined by a psychiatrist, get blood tests and necessary tests (mood charting, psychiatric assessment, critaria for bipolar disorder) done. She will be treated with medicines (anti-psychotics, mood stabilizers, anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications) depending on her condition. It will be better if she takes therapy(social rhythm therapy, behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapy) as its effective.

However, BPD is a condition that affects a person through periods of mania & depression.Thoughts and feeling may get out of control or difficult to handle. Some have to be under treatment for their whole life. Since you are thinking of marrying her, its good but stability of marriage will depend on how much you can absorb the tantrums when the episodes occur(weathering the storm when the forecast is cloudy). The truth is, it may not be very easy to handle, not an easy marriage but love can overcome everything.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
