Suggest Medication For High Fever

Dear Sir, My son (Aged 2 years and 9 months) has developed high fever today morning and his body shivered with stiffness. And the eyes rolled back ( I think it could be Febrile Seizure). He was immediately admitted in hospital and noticed that temperature was 103. Today he was given Erythrosain, Meftal-P, Anamol-Supposepery and t-valium. Today evening doctor told there is infection in blood (Blood sample and Urine samples were taken in the morning) and should give injection from tomorrow morning. (Injection- Oframax and Gentamicin). Doctor did not say the kind of infection/reason to my wife. I have not seen my son as I am away from him. My wife’s sister had epilepsy (now she is no more). Doctor will the new episode of my son will lead to epilepsy? What measures I have to take? I am profoundly worried. Please advise my. Thanks a lot. I am working as a Public Health Researcher (Not a medical doctor). Dr.Retheesh Public Health Researcher New Delhi.

Hi,

Febrile seizures are seizures which occur during high fever in some kids. They usually occur form 6 months to 6 years of age and usually are self limiting after 6 years of age.

They usually do not leave any focal neurological deficits also. Rather than the height of the temperature, the rapidity of the rise of temperature is more important.

In general, antiepileptic therapy, continuous or intermittent, is not recommended for children with 1 or more simple febrile seizures.

Parents should be counseled about the relative risks of recurrence of febrile seizures and recurrence of epilepsy, educated on how to handle a seizure acutely, and given emotional support.

If the seizure lasts for longer than 5 min, buccal or intranasal midazolam (Available as Midacip Nasal spray) may be used and is often preferred by parents.

If the parents are very anxious concerning their child’s seizures, intermittent oral diazepam (0.33 mg/kg every 8 hr during fever) or intermittent rectal diazepam (0.5 mg/kg administered as a rectal suppository every 8 hr), can be given during febrile illnesses.

Such therapies help reduce, but do not eliminate, the risks of recurrence of febrile seizures. The infection could be either viral or UTI.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
