Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Medication For High Potassium Levels When On Atenolol And Simvastatin
I am a male 79 years. I have always had a slow heart beat 42. I have been on 50mg of losartan & 20 mg of simvastatin @ night (for about 2 years) also 25 mg of atenolol in morning (for 30 years). In the last 2 years when I get a blood test my potassium is higher than normal 5.7. Generally by watching my diet it comes down to 5.3 to 5.4. My doctor recently asked me if I wanted to go on losartan/with a water pill built in or Norvasc 2.5 mg. I see the Norvasc interacts with the atenolol to lower the heart rate & also interacts w/simvastatin. What should I do?
There is very low chances of amlodipine causing low heart rate. The frequency of amlodipine induced bradycardia is minimal. Also, the atorvastatin causes effects on muscle like inflammation of muscles, injury of muscles (Rhabdomyolysis) etc. even without amlodipine. Therefore, there is no convincing evidence to link this combination alone with myopathy. Therefore, addition of hydrochlorthiazide or amlodipine, will depend on their tolerability and effectivity individually. No specific preference out of these two can be advised.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
