Suggest Medication For Persistent Dry Cough

Hi, I have had a bad dry cough for over three weeks now. I suspect it can be a mycoplasma infection. In Sweden we have a prescription cough medicine that sometimes help. It contains ethylmorphine. Do you have anything like that here in the US? I live in Florida.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain dry cough can occur due to a number of causes and the most common is allergic reaction to dust, pollen, animal danders etc..
Other causes can be side effects of medications, anxiety and panic attacks, asthma, lung disorders, tuberculosis etc..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and he can advise you investigations like allergic tests, chest x ray etc as per suspected cause and treat you according to the cause..
In case of allergic reaction anti allergic medication like Levocetrizine or Allegra can be advised..
Avoid exposure to dust and pollutants..
In case of infections antibiotics can help..
Doing steam inhalations and using a cool mist humidifier in your room can help..
You can also take cough suppressants containing Dextromethorphan

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have persistent dry cough . The symptoms you mentioned in query are pointing towards condition known as severe upper respiratory tract infection. You may have lung infection or bronchitis. Do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. You can give Tixylix syrup to give symptomatic relief from cough . Also take dextromethorphan+chlorpheniramine maleat+ guiaphenesin syrup which is also very effective . I would suggest you to consult chest specialist without any delay . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test , chest x-ray or virus culture test. You should get an x ray of the chest and Immunoglobulin G levels checked for further treatment. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics ( amoxicillin or penicillin ) at least for 10 days along with decongestants and mucolytic agents . Mast cell stablizers such as sodium cromoglycate is effective to prevent infection. Sometimes dry cough can also occur due to acid reflux so eat light and non spicy specially at night.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
