Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How can I treat a persistent Staph infection? I ve had a bellybutton infection for about 2 months now. About two weeks ago, my doctor diagnosed the infection as a Staph infection. He prescribed Ciprofloxacin HCL 500MG (20 tablets-2 tablets a day). At the end of the medicine course I could see that the crustiness was nearly all gone with the redness almost completely fading away. Today I noticed that the crustiness return and my bellybutton looked slightly damp. I am female 22 yr. old, and besides a throbbing headache, I am in good health. I am 5 2 , 118lbs.
If you were my patient, i would suggest the following treatment: 1) A culture swab taken to ensure which bacteria you have growing there and to which antibiotics it is resistant. 2) I would then subscribe a topical antibiotic (Fucidin Cream) to be used 3 times daily as well as an antibacterial soap containing chlorhexidine to be used 1-2 times daily.
After the infection has cleared, i would suggest using the chlorhexidine soap 1-2 times weekly during showers to kill any remaining staph bacteria. Only as a last resort would i prescribe antibiotics, and in this case cipro would absolutely not be the first choice.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
