Suggest Medication For Presence Of Multiple Bacteria In Urine While On Foley Catheter

Female, 65 and have foley cath for 8 mos. Urine culture shows 4 organisms...Mirabilis, Faecalis, Enterococcus, and Pseudomonas. Is there an oral antibiotic that can treat all, or do I need more than one? Was told ,as a child that I m allergic to penicillin, due to purple hives (am very skin sensitive), but have since taken cefadroxil and cipro with no problem. Thanks, in advance, for any help you can give. YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
welcome!

I have completely gone through your case and appreciate your health concerns. This is a major issue with many patients on urinary cathetrization.

Treatment consists of two phases and completes in 4 weeks:-
If I was your treating physician, I would have prescribed you for 2 weeks, Ceftriaxone for first round of 2 weeks if not allergic to. Then for the next 2 weeks, TMP/SMZ antibiotic class if not allergic to. It completes the course of antibiotics and covers the causative organisms.

Add Ibuprofen if feel fever. Take cranberry juice for relieving the symptoms soon.

Hope it helps you today. If you feel the aforementioned treatment isn't working any more for you, please consult a Nephrologist right away.

Regards!
