Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m a son trying to care for my 90 year old mother who is battling sciatic nerve pain. I ve tried 800 mi ibuprofen, alive, and her dr recently prescribed low dosage tylenol with codeine. What s the best course of action because I don t like her suffering this pain while using a walker. Also where should I apply for a power chair, and diabetic supplies for her. Thank you in advance, T J Martin
I understand Sciatic pain can be pretty horrible. Usually Ibuprofen and Tyelonol won't give much relief for neuropathic pain (pain because of nerve irritation). Here is my advice for your mother:
1) Pregabalin (Lyrica) works well for pain due to nerves. You can start with 75 MG at bed time and slowly increase to twice a day if she tolerates. Pregabalin also works well for nerve pain due to diabetes
2) If I were her doctor - I would look for the exact problem - probably get an MRI - spine and also include some physiotherapy if feasible.
3) Also make sure her Blood Sugar is under control
4) Avoid too much overcounter painkillers - not good for the kidney
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Samuel Sathwik
