Suggest Medication For Swollen And Painful Parotid Gland

This is to inform, I have regarding complaints of Lower Immunity and getting frequent Cold, Cough, I was tested for Immunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgA and IgE-total) after which doctor prescribed the medicine KETASMA for 15days. I am a patient of IBS and taking Providac and Librax.       But Sir, as I started taking KETASMA (from 16-March-2011) and after 2days, I felt some swelling on the right side of my neck just below the Chin between the ear and the throat. Initially I thought it may be due to the climatic change or any other infection and I continued taking KETASMA. But the swelling grew more and after eating lunch or dinner I feel severe pain which is unbearable especially during the night time. There is no fever associated with it. So I went to my family doctor who is a Homeopath, just few days back. He told me that my Parotid Gland has swollen more and gave me some medicines. The swelling is now less but after eating the gland swells and gives more pain.      Sir, I have stopped KETASMA presently. So kindly suggest medicines to be taken for the Parotid Gland problem as the pain is seriously unbearable.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of allergy, taking Ketasma and development of a parotid swelling which increases on chewing and eating.
This is a classical history of obstruction to the outflow of saliva through the duct of a salivary gland is usually due to the following reasons>
The commonest cause being a stone, stricture, cancer or anything that blocks the outflow.
While chewing the increased salivation is pent up so the gland swells and cause the pain.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation.
Tests of blood.
CT scan of the affected area to know the cause.
Further management as per the cause found.
You may continue the medicines as would advised by your ENT Surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General and ENT Surgeon
