Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother has Alzheimer s disease (3 years). She s very noisy most of the day, screaming, yelling, lalalalalalla, babababa, that type of thing. We live in an apartment and I don t want her in a facility. We tried that and she was sexually molested by another resident. She is currently taking Lorazepam 0.5 mg. I don t think it is helping. Is there any other medication that can calm her down?
Hi Dear User ! Thank you for posting your question here !I read you concern and I understand .
Yes there are medications that can calm her down
.Your mother need to go to a neurologist to be examined and to start a full treatment for Alzheimer. According to what you write she has psychosis (secondary symptoms )need to start a neuroleptic drug (low dose of risperidone, haloperidon).
Is important also to take the main drugs for Alzheimer (a combination of the 2 grups) : -Cholinesterase inhibitors (Donezepil,Rivastigmine or Galantamine) and -N methil-D-aspartate antagonists (Memantine ) Please go with your mother to the treating doctor (neurologist ) to have a full examination and to discuss about the medications (dosage ).
Wish your mother good health! Take Care ! Dr Balliu
