Hello. I recently noticed a goiter and went to PCP. TSH is 28.04. Ultrasound came back and PCP wants to do a thyroid scan this week. He says he doesn't think it's cancer and is definitely hypothyroid. So I am thinking Hashimotos. Why not do antibody test instead of scan? What, if not cancer, is he trying to rule out? I am unsure of T3 T4 levels because when my blood was sent she didn't add them but said she was going to call the lab the next day to have them check it. Maybe she did or didn't because they didn't tell me the levels. Thank you.
Hello, Thank you for asking on HCM! I carefully read your concerns and i am trying to give you some suggestions. Ultrasound is very useful in diagnosing thyroid problems. People diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis has a higher risk of developing thyroid nodules than the general population but scintiscan is not recommended in Hashimoto thyroiditis unless an nodule is seen in ultrasound. It doesn't give any information about Hashimoto rather than for the nodules. You are right, in your case the measurement of the thyroid antibodies is useful to confirm the autoimmune etiology. FT4 and FT3 level is mandatory before treatment in order to confirm the diagnosis of hypothyroidisim. Hope this information will be helpful for you.
Kind regards, Dr.M.guni
