Hi, my husband was diagnosed bronchitis a few days ago. He is finishing up the antibiotics. However, this seemed to make his asthma act up. He is still wheezing and coughing quite often. The good news is his mucus is pretty clear at this point. He currently has Symbicort and Qvar inhalers. What should he use and how much dose to control the wheezing?
Wheezing is caused due to broncho-constriction (obstruction of smaller airway passages) which is indicative of Hyper-responsiveness of air passages.
Management consists of: 1. Symbicort and Qvar inhaler- 02 puffs twice a day, provide symptomatic relief by causing broncho-dilation (dilating the smaller airway passages, relieving the obstruction & increasing airflow to lungs) So, it can be used during an acute attack. 2. Montelukast preparations 10 mg at night- used as a maintenance therapy to relieve symptoms of asthma. 3. Antihistamines like Cetrizine can also be used to provide symptomatic relief. 4. Need for anti biotics can arise if there is a secondary infection. But this should be taken only under the guidance of your Physician. 5. Also make sure that he protect himself from exposure to cold, dust or other allergens.
Wishing a good health. Take care.
